- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 1/4 lb ground beef
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar
- Pinch ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Smidgen cayenne pepper
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns

- Mix baking soda with ¼ cup water in a bowl and add ground beef and toss. The baking soda will help the beef brown faster and more evenly. Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan on medium high heat. Add bell pepper, onion, and celery and sauté for 5 minutes. Cook, stirring occasionally until onions are translucent.
- Add garlic and cook for an additional minute. Add ground beef into the pan. Sprinkle with salt. Brown beef, then use a slotted spoon to remove from pan.
- Strain off ¾ of the fat in your pan. Add ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire, vinegar, sugar, spices to the ground beef and vegetables. Use a wooden spoon to break up any chunks of ground beef. Add ground cloves, thyme, and cayenne pepper.
- Lower heat to medium low and let simmer for 10 minutes. Adjust seasonings to taste.
- Serve with toasted hamburger buns.
