This weeks recipe is… Salisbury Steak with Gravy on a Bed of Garlic Mashed Potatoes!
This week’s recipe contains a special ingredient that we don’t use very often. But we’ll get to that shortly! Salisbury Steak is a scrumptious meal made with ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, ground black pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, mushroom, onion, vegetable oil, beef broth, and spices. Now before we reveal the special ingredient, let’s learn about the history of the Salisbury steak.
HISTORY OF THE SALISBURY STEAK
Salisbury steak has been made in the United States since around the year 1879. This yummy meal was named after the American physician, James H. Salisbury, who lived from 1823 until 1905. The dish is an American favorite, often served with gravy, mashed potatoes, or even pasta! Now that we know a little bit more about the history of the Salisbury steak, let’s learn more about one of the vegetables that we don’t cook often with: celery root!
ALL ABOUT CELERY ROOT
Celery root has a couple of different names. It’s known as knob celery, turnip-rooted celery, or one of the more common names Celeriac. But let’s just go with celery root for simplicity’s sake. Now, where does celery root even come from? Well, as history would have it, celery root originated in the Mediterranean. But, lucky for us, it is now cultivated worldwide.
SALISBURY STEAK OUTSIDE THE U.S.
Outside of the United States there are dishes that are very similar to Salisbury steak. For example, in Sweden there is the dish known as Pannbiff which is made by mixing together ground beef and pork with salt and pepper. Just like Salisbury steak, Pannbiff is served with potatoes, gravy, and onions.
