“Great health starts in the kitchen” -Joy McCarthy
Cooking is a Basic Life Skill
Learning how to cook and being comfortable in the kitchen is an important life skill—we all need to eat! Which means getting started early has lifelong benefits.
Cooking is Healthy
Imagine two children coming home after school and one knows how to cook, and the other doesn’t. One will be able to whip up a healthy meal from leftovers in the fridge and fresh ingredients they find in the kitchen. Then, on the other hand, the child who doesn’t know how to cook is stuck rummaging through the kitchen looking for anything that can be eaten right away—usually junk food!
Cooking Makes Your Life Easier
Like any skill, once you’ve learned how to do it, it becomes a source of pride. Children who can take care of themselves, and others when it comes to cooking a meal, build up their self-esteem by cooking. And if you start now, you might have your child taking over cooking dinner before you know it!
This week’s recipe is Cajun Chicken with Corn Salsa!
Fun Food Facts!
Cajun history
Cajun cooking originated in Louisiana from a group of people who immigrated from France to Canada. Later, they were exiled from Canada and finally settled into the swamps of southern Louisiana.
Salsa History
The Inca people were historically the first to create Salsa. Salsa, which is a combination of chilies, tomatoes, and other spices, can also be traced back to other Central American tribes, like Aztecs and Mayans.
The Spaniards first encountered tomatoes after they conquered Mexico in 1521, which marked the beginning of the history of Salsa.
